You are ready to enter the internet arena and you are about to create a presence in cyber space. You learn that you can get started for free. You can go to blogger.com or any number of places and now you are in business without spending a dime.

The problem is, is free really worth it? Will free put money in your pocket? I for one would be the first to tell you there is a place for free but the old axiom "you get what you pay for" is still true when it comes to the internet.

So you must ask yourself the real question. Do you want to run a real bonafide business? If the answer is yes like any business you have to invest in yourself. Your domain name, when it comes to the internet, could very well be your single most important investment.

Lets talk first about image.

You want to be viewed as a professional not an amateur. When it comes to making your online presence look professional owning your own domain name is the first step in that process. With so many free options available online, you do not want to join the ranks of so many people who mistakenly think that they will be just as successful (and save money) by going the free route.

There Are Problems With Free.

When people see hybrid urls that come from practically all free services they recognize that you are probably a novice and who wants to buy from a novice. The perception is weather right or wrong, is that you are someone just starting off on line.

Plus, when you are relying on a free blog, no matter which platform you are using, you don't own a thing. If the service that provides the blog, say WordPress blogger.com decides that they don't like something about your blog, they can shut you down and they don't have to let you know they are doing it or why they are doing it.

When you take the time establishing your online presence and creating a professional look, after buying your own domain name, you can actually flip your website and sell it. It's the same concept as when someone buys a house, fixes it up and sells it for a profit. There are several sites online that will allow you to place your site up for sale; Flippa.com is one of those sites.

Buy a good domain name, host it with a great hosting company like GVO, put up a site, use services like veretekk.com to obtain tons of traffic. (and hopefully some sales) than list it on Flippa and make some quick money. Your Domain Name-3 Tips When Picking.

When it comes time to picking out your domain name there is a few simple things to keep in mind:

  • 1. Do keyword research to find a list of keywords associated with your niche that get's a lot of traffic every month. Then try to get one of those keywords, exactly, as your domain name. For example, in the niche for cat toys let's say I found a great keyword, "cheap cat toys" and this key word gets a lot of monthly searches without too much competition. The next step would be to obtain the domain name CheapCatToys.com. That way you will have picked a domain name that is already a highly searched for. This will almost guarantee you quite a bit of free, highly targeted, traffic.
  • 2. If all of your marketing efforts are going to be online I wouldn't worry too much about the extension, however you should always try to get one of the top 3, .com, .net, or .org. If all of your marketing efforts are with PPC or article marketing so no one really needs to type in your domain name, they just click on a link which is in your articles. This makes the extension that you pick of less relevance. If you are going to be marketing in such a way that people would have to actually type in the domain name to find your site, then you want to get a .com first and foremost and secondly a.net extension. .
  • 3. Your domain name needs to be hosted with a webhosting company and all webhosting companies are not equal. If you are serious about building an online presence that will produce an income for you year after year you are going to have to have at a minimum a good auto-responder service.
